First Aid Appointed Person

First Aid Appointed Person course

Description

Where an employer’s assessment of First Aid needs identifies that a First Aider or Emergency First Aider is not necessary, the minimum requirement on an employer is to appoint a person to take charge of the First Aid arrangements, including looking after equipment and facilities, and calling the emergency services when required. They can also provide emergency cover, within their role and competence, where a first-aider is absent due to unforeseen circumstances (annual leave does not count).

An appointed person is someone who is nominated to take charge of first aid arrangements, such as looking after the first aid kit and calling an ambulance in an emergency. A first aider is someone who is qualified to give first aid treatment in the event of an injury or illness. To fulfil their role, appointed persons do not need first-aid training. However, emergency first-aid training courses are available. Appointed persons are not first-aiders and should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been trained.

This course is suitable for low risk environments where the risk assessment shows that there is no requirement for an Emergency First Aid or First Aid at Work trained first aider to be present in the workplace. However, even if a First Aider is not legally required, an employer must still appoint a person to take charge of first aid provision.

If any of your staff members have asthma, allergies, diabetes or a heart condition which have been documented in your risk assessment, the HSE recommendation is that you should consider your staff to undertake the 3 days First Aid at Work (FAW) course because these conditions are not covered in the First Aid appointed person or Emergency First Aid (EFAW) at work course.
